The story — Long Beach Bar Light was built in 1870 on tall screw piles; at high tide its silhouette resembled a giant water bug, inspiring the local “Bug Light” nickname. Fire destroyed the light on July 4, 1963. In 1990, a near-replica was built at Greenport Yacht and Shipbuilding, launched in sections, and assembled on the existing foundation.
